Regarding Renting, Landlords, and Lying.

Hey all. 23m here, currently attempting to move into my first apartment with my GF. We’ve both never viewed somewhere before, never applied anywhere, and have never had an independent property. We are currently living in an abusive household together with her parents, where things are starting to getting severe. We have a viewing scheduled for the only place that’s wanted to move forward on Sep. 12th. This apartment requires us to make 3x the rent individually, unless married in which it’s combined. Obviously we don’t make $3,500 individually a month (wtf?) so wondering what happens next.

We have acceptable credit, no criminal history, she’s working at the moment and trying to secure a higher pay position. I’ve been unemployed (besides 3-4 weeks at a few jobs) over the course of the last 2 years or so. I plan on getting a new job immediately after moving. We both have 3g worth of savings.

What can we do to ensure we score the highest we can on this application? Again, we’ve both never encountered a landlord. GF is suggesting we lie about being married and say the date is coming up (after viewing, before moving) – but won’t this just get verified via background check?

Should we lie about income instead? Should we just be upfront about everything? Affording rent will not be an issue, it’s just this initial requirement.

What now before our scheduled viewing?
