Relationship versus transactional

Dr. Linda Duxbury of Carleton University once gave a public lecture (wish there were transcripts). Words to the effect: They want the worker to think in relationship term, going the extra mile. They tell you this is a family, service to the public and to the customers, etc. Then they treat you transactionally–you are only profit for them–and wonder why morale is low.
