Retailer lied to me about how many hours I would get.

A couple of months ago I interviewed and got a position at a discount retailer here in the US called Marshall's, at the interview, the manager stated I would receive around 30 hours a week which was perfect given my needs and my other commitments. They told me I would train on register first and then after a few weeks, they'd ask which department I wanted to be in and move me to my permanent department (I thought this was a red flag because I've never had a job say nor do this. ) So I accepted the job thinking it would be fairly decent. But boy I was completely wrong. The first week I only got 7 hours (1 shift), the second week I got 15 hours (3 shifts), and the third week I got 8 hours (2 shifts), and despite having me fill out my availability multiple times,…

So I accepted the job thinking it would be fairly decent. But boy I was completely wrong. The first week I only got 7 hours (1 shift), the second week I got 15 hours (3 shifts), and the third week I got 8 hours (2 shifts), and despite having me fill out my availability multiple times, they scheduled me each week on the day I specifically stated I have a non-negotiable commitment. When I asked them about my hours, they said “hours are short for everyone this week, it'll be better” and nothing ever became better.

I've worked in retail for quite some time now and I know that there's always a slow period when it comes to hours. My last employer was always up front about it, even when they would interview new candidates.

If they knew hours would be short, then why didn't they state it during the interview? Secondly, why even ask for someone's availability if you are just going to disregard it?

So I said screw it and ghosted them.
