Salary range not revealed until after the second interview, based on your skill set. Is this becoming a trend?

I just had a phone screening interview with a recruiter at an IT company for a technical writing position. The salary range wasn't listed on the job posting, but I submitted my resume anyway as it looked like I was qualified. I shot the recruiter a quick email before the interview asking about the salary and never got a reply. Toward the end of the interview, she asked what my salary requirements were. I said I expected they were compatible with what the company was offering and asked for the range. She then proceeded to tell me that the range wasn't given until after a second, 45 minute interview, based on what I would bring to the table. So, essentially, I am working my ass off to impress them TWICE, all with no idea whether it's even worth it or not. Has anyone else encountered this? I really hope this…
