As you may already know salary transparency is increasing across the United States (CO, CA, CT, MD, NV, NJ (Jersey City), NY (NYC, Ithaca), Ohio (Cincinnati), Rhode Island, Washington
If you aren't in one of those locations, feel free to let your state congress rep and those running for office, you support this and they should too.
I encourage everyone to look up if you reside in one of those locations or the company does and report any violations you see, this includes online advertising so LinkedIn, etc. If you apply for a job in those states, you can ask for the range if they are not required to post it in the job advert.
Keep in mind that a lot goes into salary decisions and offers. Experience, specialty skill set and the full package (variable compensation), industry, company size.
For the more corporate jobs, compare any offers you get with a side-by-side comparison about how much your healthcare is going to cost, 401K contribution, stock options, etc. For your variable compensation you want to know how achievable is the full variable. When asked for how much you are looking for, you should answer with a range and add depending on the full package, benefits, 401k . I've been offered more than my ask because of my experience, which made me realize how underpaid I was.
I hope this helps anyone looking for a job.
