I asked the owner of my company a couple months ago if I could work from home. My entire job can be done remotely, at the time we had 5 or 6 employees who would pop on from home to help with the workload here and there. I explained that with gas and my ex giving up his visitation(leading to some very expensive childcare needs) I was really struggling and some weeks I had to decide whether to put gas in my car or feed myself instead of just feeding my child. We’ve been so short staffed I even offered to pick up several overtime shifts if they granted me work from home. The owners wife told me no, that everyone is struggling and if she allowed me to work from home, she’d have to let everyone work from home. I was upset, but I accepted it, cut corners where I could, started taking public transportation for my oncology visits to save money( I’m not in a big city, so that trip pretty much took 12 hours) and made it work.
I got shorted 30 hours on my last paycheck. We’re a pretty small company, so I spoke directly with the person who handles my payroll the day before payday and let her know I needed it fixed. Tomorrow is payday. My last check still hasn’t been fixed. These people KNOW I regularly have to choose which essential bills get paid and shorted me almost an entire check and haven’t even raised a finger to fix their error and pay me. My payroll person set up a meeting for us to figure it out ONE WEEK after I brought it to her attention. The day of the meeting, I shot her a message to ask where she wanted me to go and she said….”oh, sorry, I decided to take a WORK FROM HOME DAY TODAY.” Because, yep. They’ve opened up more employees to being allowed to work from home. So glad I dedicated my life to working healthcare just to be treated like this by a company that says “we’re like a family” and ends every goddamn email with a fucking prayer and a bible verse.
