Shift ending time – is this fair?

I work in a very busy restaurant in Liverpool, England. The pay is terrible but the tips are good so I’m sticking with it for the time being. I work hard, and like most hospitality jobs in the UK (and I’m sure elsewhere) the staff are overworked, and there’s never enough of us put on busy shifts. However, when my rota clearly states I’m on a 12-9, shouldn’t I be at least asked if I can stay on an extra hour (sometimes more)? They (management) constantly expect me to stay behind late, without asking. I’m uneasy with just leaving at the end of my shift as I’m still in my three month probation. So, they essentially can wait and see if it’s busy enough before they pay me less than ten pounds for an extra hour. Sorry, just wanted to rant really. Under the paving stones: the beach!
