Ok Reddit, can you help me solve a dilemma I’m having. Should I quit asap or should I wait until I have secured a new position elsewhere?
The company I work for has gone down the toilet over the past six months. I work in a small office of about 80 people with a call handling side and an administration side. When I started the two roles were separated with very specific job titles and now senior managers want to merge the two sides. Not only do they expect me to do the work that I am currently doing, but they also expect me to take calls as well. The reason for this is because we lost about 30 people over the summer and they have failed to recruit the necessary replacements.
If I was sat there twiddling my thumbs, looking for work to do or browsing online all day and playing games then I would have no problem with this, but I am not. I am working almost flat out on a daily basis and they want me to do more. They’ve also used the phrase do more for less a couple of times.
I’ve tried to explain this to them a couple of times and I even told them about the specific requirements that the customers I look after have. I was told that my customers requirements would be respected and guess what, they have not been. The first shift pattern they have placed me on would mean that I can’t meet my customers requirements. So they could potentially lose customers who generate millions of pounds for our company just so that I can take a few calls.
To justify their position, they’ve picked and chosen a couple of sentences from my contract and when I’ve looked at it fully, I’m of the opinion that those sentences are for exceptional circumstances only or if there was a massive change to how the company was operated, which there has not been.
Another thing that has really annoyed me is the pay. My pay’s lower then average for my sector. I did get a rather small 3.5% pay rise in April, as did everyone else in the company. However, on the back of soaring inflation the company has approved above inflation pay rises for senior managers, our technicians and pretty much everyone else at the company, except for staff at my level. Many people have asked about this and the answer we’ve had is that it will be reviewed in April 2023.
So overall I’m feeling really disrespected and it feels like anything I say is falling on deaf ears.
I’m very conflicted, I can quit now, I have enough in my savings to see me well past Christmas, but that money is to go towards a deposit for a house. I don’t want to blow my savings pot on leaving a poor company, but at the same time I don’t want to be at a poor company.
I should point out that I do enjoy the work that I do and I have a good relationship with my customers, it just the poor treatment by the senior managers is forcing me out. I will leave at one point, it’s just do I leave asap or do I wait for a new position before I go.
Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.
