Should I use unclaimed company equipment?

Not a rant, more of a question. I used to work for a company which had been bought out by a much larger company. I had been issued some equipment (laptop, tablet, ect) when I started. Working for takeover company was hell, and motivated me to get out. However it's been a year since I quit, yet I never received the prepaid mailer for the tech and have never heard from my former employer regarding this. After speaking to some of my ex-coworkers (that had since been terminated due to “restructuring”) I realized that they had been harassed repeatedly until the equipment was returned. It seems that I might have been forgotten about. I am going to be starting grad school in the fall, am strapped for cash, and need a new computer/tablet to take notes. My question is if I can somehow have this equipment jailbroken or something to…

My question is if I can somehow have this equipment jailbroken or something to use for school? The laptop is windows, but the tablets are Apple products. Would doing this somehow notify the company that I this have this equipment? Any idea how long is long enough? ( I like in Canada if that's relevant) Any advice would be nice!
