Signed a fixed term contract for a job this week, got contacted today to be told they have run out of funding

Frustrated and just ranting here. There isn’t much that can be done about it. I have been working remotely on fixed term contracts with a professor from my alma matter as an external research assistant. The contracts are usually 3-4 months long and extended every time. Contracts can’t be longer due to funding cycles. 3 days back I signed on the extension contract for the next 3 months and was quite happy because I am moving to the city anyway and won’t have to work remotely anymore. Today the professor called and let me know that they have run out of funding and won’t be able to keep me past June. They were very apologetic and I don’t blame them but just annoyed that this happened after I actively stopped looking for another role because I wanted a break from job hunting.
