Since when does a salary position = mandatory overtime with no compensation?

I recently accepted a job that I was told was hourly plus commission. A few weeks in my manager is asking me why I’m leaving after only 8 hours….. hmmm, because that’s how every job in America works? I was then told that I would be expected to work 10 hour shifts. So I asked if I would get a three day weekend, he looked confused that I would ask for this. So I asked if I was being paid overtime for this. He said that this is a salary position and it has been calculated into my pay. Well, at this rate I’m averaging $18 an hour if you backtrack their math. My question, should salary position’s qualify for OT? Or do employers use this as a method of keeping you perpetually on the clock?
