Sorry, I’m Not Available Before 8:00

The post about fired, rehired and begged to stay reminded me of a story out of my past. After college, I worked a few jobs at once. Waiting tables, bartending, and then I got a job at an inbound catalog call center. When I went through the hiring process, I listed my availability as after 8 and before 4 any day. “No I didn’t. I’m right on time.”

“The schedule has you at 7:00 and you didn’t show up until almost 8:00.”

“That’s right. I wrote on my intake forms that I wasn’t available before 8:00.” I smiled and put my headset back on and took calls. They never said anything and I was never scheduled before 8:00 again.

I wish I remembered that supervisor’s name. She was very cool and never got mad at me for contradicting her on the floor. Many would have.
