“Speak up if you need help!” Except don’t.

Just a vent. I started a new job recently, going to keep vague but it’s customer service, a field I’m all too familiar with. To clarify though, I live and work in PA. Not a job I’m physically in the best condition for, but after being unable to find a job for a year, I had to take it to pay my bills until I can find something more suitable for my skillset. This company preaches that we should “speak up if we’re having trouble/need something because we care and we’re here for you!!!!!” I have a bad back. Something that I informed my employer of during the interview process, and something I told my direct supervisor as a precaution. I can’t lift super heavy things, harder to bend, etc. I’m just not very physically strong. Would try to get it fixed but that would require some decent healthcare coverage.…

My current job is also of the mind that we get scheduled long enough to be exhausted by the end, but not long enough to receive any kind of break. Anyway, I mention this to my supervisor after being assigned a task that would require a lot of heavy lifting for a long period of time. I said I could probably do it, but it may take me a bit longer than the average time, or I might need some help with it. She said okay no worries, you’re all good and if you need to sit for a minute afterwards, please do. Seemed friendly enough about it.

So why do I receive a phone call on my day off bitching me out for 10+ minutes about it from the head manager? Were you or were you not informed of this when I started working here? Get real.

So now I get to go to work knowing my supervisor went to my head manager, and who else, with my business. “Bringing the team down.” Thanks. Not looking forward to the awkwardness or the possibility of getting fired while trying to make ends meet. I understand one should expect a lot of movement and pain doing a customer service position, but I give it my all on my shift and rarely have the energy to do anything else by the time I’m done.
