spending so much time and energy at a place you don’t want to be in is hell

Think about, you're surrounded by people who don't really care about you the way your family does, and your employer certainly doesn't care about your problems unless they interfere with your work and then you're fired. Yet we exhaust so much effort at the work place. This is some kind of hell I never thought could exist
