So, here's the background, had a job that was okay to be honest, but had unsociable hours that was beginning to affect my relationships and personal life. Got a new job which I started yesterday which is Monday – Friday and nice sociable hours and was said to provide training for those without experience (me in this case) as well as potential to learn new practical skills, and even talk of paying to send you back into learning if there was a particular area of the business you wanted to focus on. To my surprise I was offered the job at the interview, which in hindsight, might have been a bit of a red flag, but the thought of no more driving around all night and seeing those close to me again was too good to turn down, so I accepted.
Arrived yesterday, and in my experience on a first day, you get a bit of an induction, help to find your feet as well as filling in all the relevant forms etc that you need to. Well, none of this happened, I arrived, was quickly shown where to put my stuff and where the fire exit was and was then handed a few tools and told to get on with it basically. For the rest of the day I said maybe about 20 words, no one introduced themselves, nor did I see a single manager or representative of the company. Turned out that even people already working there don't seem to know each others names, and everyone seems to keep themselves to themselves. At break times I looked up and everyone had just wandered off without informing me, I had no idea how long the breaks were and the same thing happened at the end of the day which turned out to be half an hour earlier than I was told in the interview.
Bearing in mind that I've never done work like this before (which they know) and the job is in a pretty heavy duty factory environment, this just all seems very wrong somehow. Start my second day in a few minutes so hopefully it just turns out to be a bad first impression, but if not, I suppose it's back to the drawing board again. Why can't these things ever be simple?
