Stay an Extra Two Months

Rewind to 2015. I was the Assistant General Manager at a very expensive celebrity chef restaurant. Our management team was supposed to be 5 people. One got fired and never replaced, one quit and was never replaced, and the third went out for medical reasons and never returned. After five months of running with only two managers, I asked for a raise. Nothing ostentatious, but enough to acknowledge that I had been doing three people's jobs for months, while the business was saving $15,000/month in salary this whole time.

My boss spoke with corporate, corporate said no. Ok, fine – I quit. I gave them SIX WEEKS NOTICE. We're on a small tropical island and it can be hard to find staff, but that's more than enough time. Go forward five and a half weeks and they haven't interviewed anyone, let alone hired someone.

The Director of Operations flew 5000 miles to sit down with me and demand two more months. I explained that I had given six weeks notice and in addition, had a surgery planned followed by a trip. When I asked if I would be getting a raise or a bonus for the extra two months, I was told that I owed it to the company to work at my current salary. When I refused the DoO freaked out, swearing at me, called me a fucking traitor, and threatened to torpedo my career in the restaurant industry.

I finished my last 2 days, and never looked back. I worked in restaurants for another 4 years and have completely quit the industry
