Strung along for over a year: Promise of promotion

My partner has worked at a company for over 6 years. In that 6 years he has been the model employee, only been late 1 time and only called out sick once when he had COVID in 2020. Despite this and being with the company for over half a decade, he has had no raises save for the little cost of living adjustments (2% here, 3% there, nothing that would actually account for this years inflation either). He has a bachelors degree in the field he works and is getting paid an “entry level job” salary. Well around this time last year there was mention of a promotion and he was actually recommended by the company to apply.

So he did this, a week later he was shot down, not even invited to interview for the position. A couple months later they say there is another opening higher up in the company and ONCE AGAIN, invite him to apply, stating he would be a could candidate for the position. He gets an interview, tells me it goes great, and then a week later gets his rejection letter via email.

Fast forward to 3 weeks ago, he is doing an internal search for a higher up position on his companies intranet, he sees one he’s qualified for and applies. A week later he is invited to interview. It is a grueling 4 hour interview with a “group”, they run through all kinds of scenarios, are extremely vetted, you name it. He gets an email that he has been approved to the “next round” of interviews. His boss tells him that hardly anyone gets past the first round, so he must have a really good chance of actually clinching this job. This past Friday he drove an hour and a half to their corporate office for his second round of interviewing. He just just received a rejection letter today. I wish this was all a joke.

This company apparently wants him and his talents so bad that they actually recommended him for multiple higher up positions and string him along for months, yet in the end he gets no promotion and no raise.

He just told me hes officially done with this company, hes going to start applying for other jobs and leave as soon as he can. It’s a real shame this company just lost a seasoned employee because they couldnt pay him for what hes worth. Unfortunately, I bet it will be months before he gets a different job so he will have to stick it out for a while longer. We’re in the process of moving rent houses so finances is extremely tight right now and he cant quit ASAP. Feeling very defeated right now and I’m sure he feels even worse. Come to find out this company only hires you/promotes to the top level positions if you “know someone” in the company and has nothing to do with actual merit. Pathetic.
