I recently moved from a position in COVID response to what I thought was my dream job at one of the premier immunology research labs in the world , but it's quickly turned into a nightmare.
My boss has a sign on our door that reads 'the beatings will continue until your morale improves' and regularly jokes about her verbal beat downs. The other day I told her she would be pleased with my work and I have improved, to which she replied 'lets see if my beatings have paid off'..
She is verbally abusive constantly calling me stupid and telling me to 'turn my brain on' and 'engage the brain'. Even though the position was listed has hybrid, she has a great disdain for anyone who WFH and openly mocks those that do. I have been in office everyday for the last 120 days leaving my sick mother home without care just praying she loosens up once she becomes comfortable with my performance, but I'm frankly sick of it.
I grew up in a physically and verbally abusive home, and I don't come to work to be brutally reminded of that. I'm scared to go into our shared office because it's a 40 hour/week abuse session where she can turn around at any moment and chew me out for my supposed idiocy at any time.
I want to report this to HR but my family says I should keep my head down and search for a new position before rocking the boat.
