Surviving the old way

Has anyone here ever thought about trying to make a go of it like our ancestors did? By farming and trying to be self sufficient. Raising and canning your own food. Selling some of the fresh produce to make some money to buy things you can't produce on your own. I have often had the thought that this way of life may be a nice escape from the daily 9 to 5 grind. I grew up farming on a small scale. We never really relied on it because my Dad had a good job. I know it wouldn't be a possibility for everyone. Just wondering if anyone else out there has thought about it like me.
