I submitted my letter of resignation yesterday after accepting a position at a different company which carried with it a 15% base pay increase. The director's response was to immediately get the admin team and HR involved, and within a few hours they presented a counter offer that I found satisfactory. The exact terms were an immediate 13% while maintaining my eligibility for an additional, performance-based raise at the end of May. The performance-based increases have already been determined by our performance reviews from last year and it is likely that I will get at least an additional 3% increase from that. Nothing is set in stone, but my performance review meets all of the requirements for an additional raise so I'm not worried about getting screwed out of the second raise.
What I am worried about is that I found out today that, after I left for the day yesterday, my manager approached a staff member in a different department about cross-training into my area. This person currently works a job that is a lower pay scale, but is qualified to do my job. Without delving too much further into the nitty-gritty, I'm pretty confident this was something that was broached so that if there's a next time, I won't have the company by the balls and basically force them into choosing to pay me more or spend years training someone to replace me. I can appreciate their position. I'm a pretty big cog in the machine and the director leans pretty heavily on me to get stuff done.
So why am I concerned at all? I trust my manager and director. We have worked together a long time and have a good rapport. I also have a pretty good idea of when they will support me and when they will not. However, I have witnessed the organization itself do some things that are not the most trustworthy. I wouldn't put it past them to placate me with a raise, have me train my replacement, then send me packing later on. I don't expect this to happen, but I want to try to cover my bases if at all possible.
Would I have any sort of recourse in the occasion of this occurring? Is there anything in particular that I would want to have documented? Now seems to be the time to request anything in writing if I can get it. I appreciate any sort of advice. I was very happy with the offer and now I just want a little more security/peace of mind.
