This is my first post so sorry if I’m not doing this quite right.
I (29F) am currently in the type of office job that is in the most hated department of our institution. When I say most hated, it might be hyperbole but when I mention it to anyone I meet there, they immediately cringe. I don’t blame them, I guess, we’re part of how people get paid (expense reimbursements) but the rules are really strict so when someone doesn’t follow to the tee, they lose out on money.
Anyway, I’m always told it’s “thankless work” which would be one thing, but I’m afraid I might just be too sensitive for my job. It’s not that it’s just thankless, a lot of the time people are just downright hateful and mean when all I’m doing is what I get paid to do. I basically get told to “suck it up” when I’m on the verge of a breakdown at my desk for an unnecessarily harsh email to both me, my boss, and my boss’s boss.
I don’t know what to do and any time I go to HR, they haven’t really been very helpful. They just tell me to talk to my boss. And I do. And it’s just written off as “part of the job.”
Am I just too sensitive? Am I crazy for thinking being treated this way isn’t okay? I know my job in the grand scheme isn’t terrible and there are certainly worse out there, I guess I’m just asking if there’s anyone else out there who has gone through this and any advice.
Thank you for your time if you read the whole thing. If not:
Tl;dr – I get a lot of hate at my office job for enforcing the institution’s rules (which is my job) and am just told to “suck it up” since this is “thankless work.” Am I just too sensitive for thinking being treated this way is not okay?
