That time I spoke up about a concern with company stability

The other recent thread here reminded me of this story. In January 2020 (oh you bet the date is important) I was working at a marketing agency that was a child company of a giant Fortune 500 not named “ComniOm Troop”. I had only been there about 4 months at the time but I had adjusted well, my team and manager were great and I had a stellar 3 month performance review. We had a handful of clients but the main one (like 70%) was a huge telecom monopoly fair and ethical company who’s name is 3 letters. We had a department meeting where we set goals for the year and discussed our current projects and statuses and stuff.

At the end of the meeting I asked, “so worst case scenario here but I see that 70% of our business is . If something happens and cuts our contract aren’t we going to be in trouble?”

Obviously I was reassured that we had great contracts and other new business incoming. Then in private I got written up, although it was pretty mild because my manager was a decent dude and I think he talked them down. Several coworkers IMed me or personally thanked me for saying something because they were worried too.

And would you believe it? Just a couple of months later a global pandemic happened and the giant telecom company cut most of their spending. And who do you think the first layoff was?

Also because of the nature of the layoffs, they would have to prioritize rehiring us first when they could again. So instead they closed our child company and rolled it into a different child company. The CEO of the child company, who’s name is not “Pina Tosey” is still employed by the parent company. As far as I know she’s the only one who survived the layoffs.
