The baseline assumption is that everyone acts from self-interest, and that sucks

Yesterday, I made a snarky comment about wealth-hoarding (namely, that the people who do it should feel guilty), and virtually every reply I received said something like: “Why do you feel entitled to other people’s money?” “Go invent something and quit bitching.” “You must be a loser.” Etc. The baseline assumption seems to be that anyone who cares about poor people must themselves be poor—that every opinion and attitude is motivated solely by self-interest. Isn’t that sad? I said that billionaires should feel guilty about behaving selfishly, and everyone immediately assumed that I personally wanted or needed “handouts.” Plot twist: I do not lol. The baseline assumption is that everyone acts from self-interest. And that fucking sucks.
