I recently started a new union position at a large university medical center. Wow! Coming from a non-union environment, the difference is night and day.
The health benefits are cheaper and better. Dental is covered 100% by the employer. I have more PTO (12 days per year) and I actually have sick days (12 days per year) and 1 personal holiday annually that you can use whenever (basically an extra PTO day). They recognize twice as many holidays, and you get paid 2x if you work a holiday. You get OT if you work anything beyond your scheduled shift. I get a free bus pass. 100% employee match on 401(k). And I pay into a pension plan that ensures a will have steady retirement income. And since I work at a university medical center, I can take free classes at the university. They also fight for massive raises every couple years. All of these benefits were fought for and won by the union over decades.
I am still very much antiwork. But I just wanted to share this to show that change can happen when people get together and fight for change.
