The “Get Your Shit Together” List

Recently there was a post here with a screen shot of a job application and some of the questions were along the lines of “Do you have trash in your car?” or something similar. The questions were dumb for a job application, primarily because no one would ever answer them honestly if they thought it would hurt their chances of a call-back. But it got me thinking about the people I know who…just…don't have their shit together. Some are wealthy and some are poor. Some are in their early 20s and some are in their mid 40s. So clearly it's not about age, experience, or income. I came up with this list. These are things that have nothing to do with money and none of them take more than a couple minutes to complete, so they're just related to a person's belief (or lack there of) that they live in…

These are things that have nothing to do with money and none of them take more than a couple minutes to complete, so they're just related to a person's belief (or lack there of) that they live in a society, and that that fact carries with it some responsibility.

So, in general, if you can say yes to three or more of these statements, you probably don't have your shit together and need to start rethinking your life:

  1. There’s a fast food drink cup or bag in your car that is more than a week old.

  2. You’ve littered by placing any trash on the ground outside your car before driving away from a parking spot.

  3. You brush your teeth, on average, less than twice a day.

  4. There’s something you do daily (work, school, etc) that you’re 1-5 minutes late for at least twice a week.

  5. You tell a lie about why you couldn’t keep a commitment at least once a month.

  6. You make your bed when you get up less than five days a week.

  7. You have unopened mail (not junk mail) that you removed from your mailbox more than a week ago and you haven’t been on vacation.

  8. You’ve allowed bird poop to sit on the paint of your car for more than a week without cleaning it off.

  9. The “check engine” light has been on in your car for more than a week and you have no idea what is causing it but you continue driving your car.

  10. You have dirty dishes in your sink or elsewhere in your residence that were last used by you more than three days ago.

  11. If you live in a house, you regularly leave the trash cans out more than 24 hours after they’ve been emptied even though you’re not out of town.

  12. If you decide you don’t need a grocery item that is already in your cart, you put it down somewhere in the store besides where it goes.
