My mom is part of the union at the university hospital in my city. She had quit working there a few years back but came back and was on the union board each time she’s been employed. Last time, the hospital wasn’t giving nurses their owed vacation days, and basically told the union “well they would get the days if they properly asked for them”. My mom made and handed out a pamphlet teaching nurses how to ask for vacation days, was reprimanded for it, and when nurses started asking for their vacation the hospital immediately changed the employee manual so they wouldn’t have to owe vacation days anymore. The same thing is happening since she was reemployed, and the union is too weak to do anything. If they go on strike they will lose their nursing license. What can she do? Are there any legal routes to getting the hospital to start actually giving out the vacation days they said they would?
TLDR; the hospital isn’t giving nurses vacation, and the union is too weak to do anything. What do we do?
