I work for a small company that is open 365 days a year. Every weekend, one employee has to be on-call (for 13 hours each day) in case the employees who are working that weekend need assistance. I have always thought this system was bullshit, but doubly so once I got added to the list of on-call employees without being asked. I let it slide because I figured that I would be making some extra money and that I would only have to be on-call every sixth weekend. But there are two issues…
First, they decided to cut my hours in the week leading up to each on-call weekend, to make sure I don’t make overtime.
Second, the manager recently decided to take herself off the list of on-call employees without telling anyone, so now I have to be on-call every fifth weekend. This means that I have to cancel my plans for next weekend, and I’ll be on-call this Christmas.
I’m already looking for a new job. Hopefully I’m out of here long before Christmas. Wish me luck.
