So I’ll try to keep this short and quick, but I have been wanting to share this for a while. I’m a college student and two years back I started working and started getting work experience and oh boy, horrible management from day one at minimum wage jobs. I have 3 examples-
-A texmex restaurant: The owner and his dad ran the place like dictators, paid $9 and all so he can yell at our faces and record our every moves. He made me cry (I’m an anxious person and this was my first job) in front of an Uber eats driver, called me stupid, and yet had the audacity to be shocked when I quit after a month. His daddy also intimidated a coworker with how he watches her every move including when she goes to the bathroom or looks at her phone or picks or nose because of how often he looks at his little cameras. Awful management, food wasn’t even that good (bonus points for arguing with people who leave bad google reviews)
-a burger shop: Beginning of covid so they closed down shop a week into me being hired and then brought me back as the lead out on curbside. Would schedule me for 4 hour shifts 6 days a week even though I had school and would put me outside for every single one. I got a really bad sunburn and all they told me when I brought it to their attention was “wow that sucks”. Had to buy my own sunscreen. And I’m of a darker complexion so I don’t burn easily (from my experience) but they had me out so often it got to that point. Would get upset if I went inside the store for some shade and would tell me to do one thing, I’d do it and then get mad at me because I wasn’t doing it in the exact way they wanted. They would do it themselves and it was just as good as me. Never trained me on anything besides cashier but trained hires newer than me.
Oh and the kicker- My grandpa died from some complications (not covid related) and I was told I needed to find cover for the day it was his funeral or else I couldn’t go because it was my responsibility to find cover or show to my shift. Fun people.
-Office job- Keep this one short(the issue list was long) My friend hooked me up as a bookkeeper for his mom’s company. She was very lovely at first. She had me train under this lady who was going to be working from home and I’d take over in the office. Okay. So I was just supposed to be the bookkeeper and once this lady left I had to take over her job without any training and was expected to know everything by this lovely manager. The lady, no fault to her, had to leave due to some medical issues, sadly she was diagnosed with cancer a week before she ended up leaving. Obviously, the office felt bad, she was super sweet and we were aware she needed time to process and she stopped answering messages as often. The manager became frustrated at this because I had no idea how to take over her job and her not answering prompted her to say “So what she has cancer. If it was me I’d tell myself to suck it up!”. This was also the same manager who would call me on my time off (9 o clock at night when the office closed at 6pm) and expect everyone to be a workaholic like her. Worst environment ever.
Now I’m at a decent job for a college student(still retail, a little above previous wages) and I appreciate my management for being understanding and great compared to the lunatics I worked for in the past.
I just wish I found this sub earlier so I could tell all my previous employers to fuck off instead of staying quiet like the meek person I am.
