I have been working for my current company in various positions for 13 years now. Started as the seasonal night crew restocking the shelves, and have moved up to HQ working on product design.
I am a Digital Native working with a lot of people who can’t figure out their computers, and found that everyone is doing things differently. I have been working to align functions and put out training documents to improve efficiency and communication, as well as introducing new technologies to help with their digital transformation.
When the shelter in place first hit, I wrote a proposal to create a new job function to help our team with the things that leadership has been complaining about most. The proposal was loved, but they told me we didn’t have the budget to hire one more person to the team (even though the CEO made $21mil that year).
Leadership keeps wishing we had someone to do what I want to be doing, but have made no effort to actually hire someone to do it.
My boss wants to promote me, but “can’t do so unless someone above me gets promoted or leaves”. I work with a ton of people who are happy in their position and have no desire of moving up or out.
I found out a friend of mine is the director and at another company and is posting the job I want in December (after hearing me talk about it a while back), and I have every intention of applying and have informed my boss of this decision.
They now know that they will no longer be getting all the extra work I was doing for free, and there is now a scramble to accommodate my wants and needs.
Either way, the clock is set for December. My job is either going to finally do something about their structure issues, or they are going to lose the crutch they have been leaning on for too long.
