Long time lurker here. I scroll through this subreddit every day because I am interested in American culture and society. I follow a few other work related subreddits too, mainly within IT because that is my industry.
There’s one thing that really catches my attention. The «lower end» jobs pay worse and the «higher end» ones pay better than where I live (Norway). But not only that — and here’s my main point — the differences are not limited to the pay check, or even perks or benefits.
It comes down to all the basic stuff (or lack thereof); mutual respect, human values, common decency, etc. How we treat each other and especially how the systems treat the workers. A lower paid job not only means no/poor health insurance and other benefits, but that managers treat you like cattle at best.
Why is this? Getting decent pay is only part of the problem, what I commonly see is basic human respect and rights being thrown out the window. I mean, the American dream isn’t just dead, it is becoming a nightmare.
I root for all of you. You deserve better treatment and a more equal society. Equality starts long before discussing your salary or comparing pay checks. Everybody deserves basic human rights, fair chances and mutual respect. You are not your job. Your boss is not their job.
You need a revolution. Don’t give in. Never give up!!
