Some background: I work from home and my parents live with me.
On Wednesday, I had to call an ambulance to take my dad to the hospital. I messaged my employer that I was taking half-a-day and I would update them later in the day. I didn't wait for a reply. Later in the day with things going well for my father, I messaged my employer and said I'd be working Thursday. They had also responded to my earlier message that taking the half-day wasn't a problem.
Wednesday evening, I got a call from the hospital with some questions and a suggestion that I might want to be there during rounds so I could talk the doctor. I decided I'd take Thursday off. On Thursday morning after my coffee, I logged in to my computer to let my employer know that I needed to take Thursday off. Instead I found a message from my employer telling me to take Thursday off and not worry about work. I thanked them and told them that I was taking Thursday off.
This is exactly how an employer should act – this type of behavior should not be an anomaly. If your employer doesn't treat you with respect, find an employer that will.
