There’s a snitch in our midst

Just joined this thread a few days ago.. didn't expect to have a contribution so soon.. I started working at my current company about a year ago. Overall I am happy with my job, however lately things have taken a turn. The vibe around the office has taken a steep downturn. Interpersonal relationships between employees is still great, however each person's relationship with management is on thin ice. I started working at my current company about a year ago. Overall I am happy with my job, however lately things have taken a turn.

The vibe around the office has taken a steep downturn. Interpersonal relationships between employees is still great, however each person's relationship with management is on thin ice.

Many have asked for an increase in compensation lately (including myself). No one has received a response on their request as of yet.

Recently, a coworker from a different department landed a job with one of our competitors. I was curious.. looked into the company and decided to apply myself.

I show up to work the next day and somehow all of management knows about my application. My direct supervisor and HR manager had a heated argument that day as well. (unfortunately I was in a meeting during this argument so details on what was said is iffy). But I do know my name, as well as two of my co worinames were thrown around.
Coincidentally, all three of us are the top employees, leads of our departments, and (imo) absolutely necessary for this company to operate.
All three of us have been looking for other opportunities because of how the company is managed and the lack of pay.

Today, my boss pulled my coworker in his office and asked why he had applied at the competitor's company. Plain and simple, he said because they are offering more. He then asked him if I had applied as well. Luckily he said he didn't know.

So.. now I'm a curious how anyone would know I applied at the other company. Though, part of me doesn't care. I know my worth and know if I were to leave (or be let go) the company would implode on itself.

That being said, I'm still looking for other opportunities. I will still continue to put in good effort, but only enough effort to justify the amount I'm being paid. If they increase my pay, I'll say (possibly). If not, I'm leaving as soon as I have accepted a new offer.
