They refused to let me quit?

I've been working at a company for 3 years and was recently “prompted” to a scheduling job. Because the higher-ups never seemed pleased with my work and I get paid at a lower rate than I used to (and receive no benefits/insurance), I asked to go back to my previous, entry-level position. I was told that hr couldn't “accommodate my request” and a meeting was called to convince me to stay. They tried to get me to sign the contract for the scheduling job, which they hadn't done for the two weeks I've held the position. I don't want to quit the company entirely, so I can't simply refuse to show up. I just never really imagined that quitting could be negotiable. Has this ever happened to anyone else?
