Thinking about quitting my job of 5.5 years over email. Thoughts?

Little back story. I’ve worked for this company for 5.5 years. I recently took a manufacturing engineer promotion there. We own another company in a different state and I have been flying there and training to help move the company to our headquarters. I signed up for the opportunity thinking the head engineer would be offered an extension of 15 months to help me get things running. Well, I don’t think he’s going to take the extension and just quit after July. This changes everything for me and makes my job so much harder. Also, they have roped me into a project manager role without even asking me and just dumping it on me, which isn’t what I signed up for. Would it be out of line to quit my job over email effective immediately?
