Thinking back on “of mice and men”

So its set in the 1930s, during the middle of the great depression. All I can think about was their living situation, 2 guys, one of whom is special needs, needing work, leave everything behind and do farmhand work for 50$ a month. no background checks, and they get free housing and free food. but what really gets me going is their shared farm dream. instead of spending their monthly 50$ wages…… they decide to save it for a dream ranch. land and property that costs a total of…. 600$ you're telling me that during the great depression you could find work, qnd save your wages for 12 months and be a home owner? or rather 6 months with a buddy and split it? I think its long passed due to tax multi property owners and make housing affordable again.
