Literally JUST signed a collective bargaining agreement for my NOC job which certified with a union in March 2021.
These are some of the wins that joining a union got us and could get for you:
Rigid framework for disciplinary measures, including expunging of disciplinary record after 12 months, and having the option to have union representation during any disciplinary discussions.
5 days of paid leave if a member experiences domestic violence
Protection against subcontracting/offshoring
Exclusivity of tasks, meaning off duty Level 1s will need to be offered OT before level 2 or others can be asked to fill in
Grievance structure
2 * 15 minute paid breaks (currently 10 mins)
Minimum 7 days advance notice of schedule changes, otherwise paid time and a half; changes need to be discussed with employee, not just informed after the fact.
Once an employee reaches 7.5 hours of OT in a single week, any additional OT is paid out at double time instead of time and a half. All OT is strictly voluntary, and offered in order of seniority
Minimum number of employees in place to cover the needs of the business, never less than 2 agents per team during regular business hours
Formal structure set up for telecommuting/WFH, including guarantees that a return to office cannot be arbitrarily forced, and the company providing ergonomic work materials (chair, desk, keyboard/mouse).
Maintenance of paid vacations(10-20 days, depending on seniority), bereavement leave and statutory holidays (12).
1 additional PTO (6, vs 5 for the non-unionized members)
Maintenance of the night premium, plus lunch breaks for graveyard will now be paid.
Average salary raise of 11% across the entire team.
And for the naysayers that complain about “what about the union dues!!1!”
My local's dues are 1.3% of my regular (non-overtime) pay. Which is tax deductible at the end of the year.
