Thoughts on the rise of self checkout machines?

At first glance, they may appear positive, as they shorten lines. But after giving it some thought, it made me think that they're used to reduce (the already low) numbers of employees in stores and supermarkets, as well as a reason to reduce their wages to the minimum. I can see them as a positive in stores that actually employ enough workers to get the work around the store done in a decent manner (without the employees being overworked or working in a way that risks injury(improper lifting of heavy things as an example, because there is not enough time to lift them safely)) and being paid a decent, living wage.
