Throwback Thursday resignation story from a few years ago

I worked a data entry/ billing job for years in a small office. It was fine. Has its ups and downs. I was leaving to return to school full time. I wanted to leave on a good note so I researched the best way to resign. That was a mistake. The business sites overwhelmingly said to resign in person. That Friday I tried all day to have a moment to talk to my supervisor but it just didn’t work out. I was anxious all day. It was awful. So I called her after hours at home that night. She tried to talk me out of quitting. Said they would do anything to keep me. Said she wanted me to work for her forever. (That would mean remaining stagnate my whole.

I’m in my early 30s at this point).

She told me I had to give 4 weeks notice. I was going to argue that’s a lie but then looked at the calendar and said, “the semester starts 4 weeks from now, this is my 4 week notice.”

She changed course and asked how I would afford to leave. She knows I’m a military widow and have a pension. I informed her the extra benefits I would get from the military as a full time student would be more than I’m making there (at $14.50/hr).

Finally I agreed to stay part time. She became resentful and her attitude towards me soured. Everyone noticed it.

Fast forward a few months and she got caught willingly and secretly exposing the office to Covid. Which I posted about before (with receipts).

I had to quarantine for 2 weeks. (Before vaccine was even announced). Coincidentally I had a week off after that because of finals.

During those 3 weeks quarantined in my room (during thanksgiving) I realized a couple things. 1. I would have failed my bio final without that extra time off and 2. I was so done. Trust was gone. Respect was gone.

When I returned I gave 3 weeks notice via email. They did not object. A notice that laid out my terms. working 3 days each week (because of holidays) and leaving early my final day. I left on my terms.

Resigning in person only benefits your boss. Don’t do it
