Today I realized I hate being an engineer

I’ve been at my current position for almost 4 years now. It’s my first professional job out of college. I’m a calibration engineer. I always go through fits of disliking my job and thinking to look for something new. But it always comes back to the fact that this company is flexible, have no issue with me working from home, don’t micromanage, etc. And there’s no guarantee that a new job would offer that. But I’m extremely bored of this job. And it’s not because I’ve hit the top of a learning curve or anything. In fact it’s quite the opposite.

I’ve been assigned many tasks to expand my learning and programming skills. I just don’t have the desire to do it simply because I’ve been lying to myself for years and I just really do not enjoy being an engineer. And I think that also plays a huge role into why I don’t have the desire to apply for a new job. I just can’t see any engineering job being interesting to me. I’m not even sure why I studied engineering.

It’s a bit sad that I’m just now realizing this. I probably won’t quit because I do like the paycheck and the flexibility the pay provides for me in my personal life, but nothing else is really keeping me.
