Today, I was told I wouldn’t be getting a promotion because I didn’t want to do something I wasn’t comfortable with

For the past 2 years, I've worked my ass off to climb the ladder in an attempt to make up for years of sitting around depressed in my early 20s. And in the past few months, I have been considered for a promotion to sub team manager. Now, a bit of context.. My employer is a huge company that you would have never heard of, who pay their staff poorly. Their glassdoor reviews are so bad that they actually asked people to write nice reviews to try and dilute the bad ones. Needless to say, that didn't work too well for them. So you can kind of see how deluded they are.

Recently, a lot of us have been shouting about pay increases and have managed to get a decent increase, with me getting one of the biggest raises in the team (44% to be exact). But this wage is still only 1k over the lower end of the industry standard.

Now, having seen the antiwork movement, I decided to ask for an 80% raise instead. My reason being, they overwork us, I've been doing the role above me for some time and well.. they're leaking employees, so I thought I may be able to benefit. I didn't, they turned it down. But they said that they're looking to promote me within the first quarter. Fine, it is what it is.

So fast forward to this week. After having taken on a lot of responsibilities that are outside of my job role, I was asked to give a presentation to the company (over 500 employees). This is horrible for anyone, but this is my kryptonite. I have panic attacks when it comes to public speaking, so just the thought of this made me feel sick. Plus, my pay rise doesn't go into affect for a few months so I'm still on the old, crappy salary. So I dont think its fair to ask this of me, given I'm really not paid enough for this. I expressed this, emphasising my mental health struggles and my manager has been off with me ever since.

Today my manager called me to say that they will no longer be pushing for the promotion as I am not showing the skills for the role, completely overlooking everything that i already do at that level.
