I'm a retail manager always trying to do right by my employees.
One of my employees makes $17/hour because he asked for $20/hour.
My other employee doing the same job makes $16/hour because he asked for $16/hour.
That's bullshit. I'm embarrassed my company pulls this shit. I want a pay raise for my $16/hour employee.
I asked my friends what I should do – advocate for my employee independently or encourage pay discussions among my employees – and I got told pay discussion is “inappropriate” and my employee should ask for a pay raise based off of “merit” rather than “anger.”
It's retail. Jfc. How are people this brainwashed by the capital class??
And what should I do, write a letter to my superiors advocating for my employee or just encourage my employees to discuss pay?
