Trying to get my first freelance gig on UpWorks – any advice?

Ultimately, I’d like to be a successful freelance writer. Ghostwriting attracts me as well. I currently am in a situation where I can figure out how to get into this space (I’m in a two income household, I also do delivery gig work like DoorDash and Instacart). I have examples of essays from college and and I have a couple creative short stories. That’s about it. It’s not a robust portfolio. I was hoping to get practice while doing actual work. I’ve always considered myself a writer, and it’s something that feels natural to me. Right now, I’ve been bidding at the lowest wage asked for and personalizing my cover letters. I haven’t written up a resume, just have my small portfolio. I’ve been bidding for insanely easy entry level stuff like rewriting documents, data entry, etc. I’ve put in about 10 bids now. What are some tips you can give me to break into online freelance work? I’m addicted to the flexibility and relative solitude of freelance/gig work.

Edit: my college degree is an Associate’s in IT, which I have Level 1 tech support work experience with but it seems like most of the tech gigs on UpWorks are much higher level than what I know so I’m just sticking to writing, which is something I actually enjoy. I don’t really like IT.

My work experience in the past was years of working in restaurant kitchens. I’m a stay at home mom of 3 who can only get out of the house to Instacart and DD at peak times only a few times a week due to my partner’s 50+ hour a week work schedule.

I desperately want to change my title of SAHM to “freelance writer”! I could write all day and all night. About just about anything. I love it because I love words, and love how you can make them go together in so many different ways.
