Turned down a job “built for me”

I work in healthcare, specifically in clinical quality improvement and risk mitigation. I was approached by a large hospital system creating a management level position for me because of my “unique skillset and expertise.” Cool, let’s talk. After waiting 8 months, was offered the position today $40K under my asking. Told them my desired rate, final offer was $2500 more than their initial. After politely turning down the position, I was asked why, and the HR rep was ‘appalled’ by my answer when I let her know that I know my worth and it was grossly devalued and her response was “but you’re only 32 and don’t have a masters.” She continued that the position was created just for me and I should be flattered and no amount of money could replace that. I advised her exactly the remainder of my asking salary (totally in market) would happily replace that.…
