The ability to work remotely when the job can easily, perhaps more effectively, be done from home is a major determining factor for most of us now.
Interviewed for a PM role that I came highly recommended for. During the interview I was asked where I’m located, which is a solid 45-1 hour commute one way from main office. I followed up by inquiring about the expectations to be in office (I was originally told one day a week at most, which I didn’t have a problem with).
I came to find out this particular hiring manager is “old school” and “has a hard time approving WFH.” He goes on to mention that he prefers meetings take place in the office and that he “just really likes to call his team into his office to use the white board.”
He also mentioned any mileage expensed is only approved from the address of the office to the required sales call/ site visit/ event etc.
My current role pays a lot less than this company offered me, but is 100% WFH now, and I can expense (and make a profit from) any travel.
At one point in time, not long ago, I’d have jumped at this offer. Now, I’d rather keep interviewing than accept a job that would cost a small fortune is gas, and quickly grow resentful toward all because of this guy’s “old school” mentality.
Dude, get with the times. Meetings held virtually have TONS of advantages. I can’t think of a single good example of an advantage to in person meetings at all, honestly.
And I’m not being hauled into your office to use your whiteboard.
Leaders like this will be phased out quickly. Adapt now or lose out, this our market not yours.
