Two weeks’ notice or nah?

I’ve never understood the logic behind why some companies decide to fire an employee right away if they give 2 weeks’ notice. Is it a power trip thing? It’s kind of like how when my friend’s company was furloughed during 2020 and then went back to working fulltime in 2021; one of her coworkers didn’t want to work fulltime so she asked to stay on as a part-time employee. They opted to instead fire her instead and then her department ended up being understaffed and overworked for months. Keeping her on as a part-time employee would have been better than losing her entirely, right? Anyways, wouldn’t it be in a company’s best interest to hold onto their employees for as long as they can? Why fire them only to lose that labor earlier AND then also have to pay out severance?
