UK based advice for initiating legal proceedings over pay.

Long story short my previous employer owes me a weeks wages that he is insisting has already been paid according to their records. The payment is now three weeks late and he is actively avoiding talking to me and not responding to my emails and the receptionist at the company appears to be deflecting my attempts to make contact via phone. It isn't a lot of money, but because of this malarkey I had to pay my rent out of my credit card which is a far from ideal situation. I'm now considering initiating legal action over this none payment. I have evidence that the money was never paid out as promised (including time sheets on the company system that show the payment has not been processed) as well as bank statements corroborating it. Unfortunately I'm not part of a teachers union yet. What's my next step?
