So my job expects a lot more than just what it says here.
I work for a very local DIY business which offers cut to size services on everything from worktop and decking to plywood and artificial grass. This of course can involve a lot of time surrounded in toxic dust with little extraction.
For the past 6 years I have slugged and sweated and lifted weight heavier than recommended by HSE because that is what is expected and for fear of taking sly comments and back stabbing I have shut up and got on with it.
The hours are long and the pay is dismal for what we are expected to do. £11.00 P/H
Through the lockdown of 2020 they were bragging about making 3m in profits.
I think the firm employs about 120 people.
I cannot stress the toxicity
Health and safety in the workplace is non existent, apart from the obvious fire doors unlocked and fire extinguishers around the place.
Dust extraction is next to none and when I ask for a respirator from my manager I am told “but theres extractors on the saws” (see image) “FFP3 masks are expensive we cant keep spending that money”
Last year they had a MEMBER OF STAFF dismantle an old furnace. Riddled with blue asbestos because it was “cheaper”.
With regards to lifting of heavy items I am not longer going to be lifting anything over 25kg on my own without help to. I know i will get slack for it but they can't fire me it can they?
Like saying i'm no longer up to the job or some sh*t.
Theres loads more to it about the general work atmosphere and t*sser assistant managers, micromanaging etc.
Anyway can i refuse to do “anything my manager asks” if it falls outside of my job description?
Sorry fot the rant. Thanks for reading.
