Fairly new manager here for a team I’ve been on for a couple of years.
There has been long-time knowledge and frustration on our team of being the lowest paid in the whole company. Unfortunately, it’s also quite difficult to get a raise on the team as well… I almost left the job prior to becoming manager because of this.
When a question was anonymously asked in a company-wide meeting about salaries and inflation, the CEO was dismissive and said “if you think you’re getting raises, that’s not happening… give yourself a raise!”
One of my team members expressed to me that he couldn’t afford to continue here if he didn’t get a raise soon… I don’t blame him, honestly. He’s not the only one among the team who feels this way. I am going to talk to my boss but unfortunately, my hands are pretty tied. My boss has already been dismissive and joked around when I brought up the question of raises for the team before. My team is often frustrated by his leadership and I feel like I often have to clean up his morale messes. In a separate instance, he told one of the team members that he had received raises because of his faith.
My question— does anyone have experience in advocating for your team to management that you don’t foresee listening to you?
Thank you!
