I have a legit question. I have always heard how we should unionize and how it makes things so much better for us workers. I recently took a job for the state that pays 18.72 an hour. It is about 3 dollars lower than it should be…at least. I took it just to have something till I find something better.
I had no idea that this was a union job. I have a friend that has a union job at another state. She literally spends her day sweeping at a job site where facebook is putting up a new building and makes thirty something an hour as an “apprentice.”
So with the wage I’m getting I was shocked to find out we are in a union. I also found out after starting that I have to pay $60 a month to park 3 blocks from work in a parking ramp, unless I want to walk about a half mile. This is downtown is a sketchy af area and crossing a couple of very dangerous roads. I worked for a well known medical clinic and we never had to pay for parking. Hell, never had to pay for parking anywhere I worked.
I guess my question is what is the point of the union if the pay is so shitty. The benefits are decent but nothing spectacular. Not shitting on unions, just confused.
