Unneeded pip?

I am worried about my husband and his job. There have been some minor issues of sexism when it came to a promotion because they felt it would look bad to promote a man over a woman. And that he was too short and to the point in email. However this is all in hearsay/conversation with his supervisor. I tried to encourage him to report it but he didn’t. His performance is paperwork based where he is out performing his coworkers at 150 percent. They added a call center to his position after he got the job(which they did not give a raise for added work duties). I have overheard him when he takes calls he is courteous and to the point and completely answers the clients questions even asking if there is anything else. However, his supervisor has complained that his phone calls are too short???? Which tbh I think she sounded unprofessional and condescending in their one-on-one but he insisted it wasn’t a big deal. Well now she wants to put him on a pip!? Because his phone calls are too short? (Even though he doesn’t have issues with callbacks or actual content of the phone call. And she insists that he tries to fax the paperwork over electronic. Which she said she briefly mentioned once in a group meeting. This seems ridiculous and I can’t help but think about the sexist comments. I really don’t see why he needs a pip at all. This is an extreme measure taken to improve performance for people who are well below standards. However the quality of his work is in direct contradiction of that. I told him he must create a paper trail, cc hr, and take control of the narrative. I am worried they are trying to steamroll him. This company has insanely high turnover. And poor ethical conduct when it comes to employees imo. I am not overreacting, right? This is a red flag? He is applying for new jobs now. But I am heartbroken for him that he has to face this sexism and awful work environment.
